Abstract

The present study was conducted with the aim of developing a process-oriented conceptual model of sefahat (feeble-mindedness) based on Islamic sources. To this end, first, by determining the unit of semantic analysis, the verses of the Holy Quran and narrations (hadiths) were examined, and the themes related to the derivatives of safah were extracted and coded in three stages. The research method in this study was qualitative content analysis (conventional and conventional-directed), and the triangulation technique (combination and integration) was used as a strategic method to enhance the scientific rigor of the qualitative research. Based on Islamic sources, according to the obtained model, the contexts, core elements, domains, consequences, and coping strategies regarding sefahat were identified. The main elements and components of sefahat include: deficient cognition, emotional instability, and hasty acceptance; and the contexts include the lack of connection with the transcendent source of knowledge and lack of inquisitiveness. The domains of sefahat were categorized into ideological, moral, social, political, and economic issues. The worldly and otherworldly consequences of the foolish act, the act of disputing with the foolish person, and the act of avoiding the foolish person were extracted. Finally, preventive strategies and harm reduction strategies in dealing with the foolish person were examined and addressed.
