Psychopathology, despite significant advancements, remains one of the most controversial issues in the field of psychology. Abundant Qur'anic evidence related to trauma suggests that Islam, as a spirituality-rich religion, can serve as a source for identifying trauma-related psychological harms and their underlying causes. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the psychopathology of psychological trauma based on the verses of the Holy Qur’an.
To this end, a semantic domain of trauma was first established, through which keywords such as muṣībah (calamity), balāʾ (trial), ḍayq (distress), ḥaraj (constraint), fitnah (tribulation), sharr (evil), ʿusr (hardship), ḍurr (harm), rijz (affliction), taklīf (burden), and kabd (toil) were identified. In the next step, 237 relevant Qur'anic propositions were collected that included these terms and their derivatives. Using thematic analysis, the trauma-induced psychological harms were extracted.
The resulting model consists of two organizing themes: underlying factors and trauma reactions. Underlying factors include four themes: (1) a mocking and mistrustful perception of God, (2) an arrogant self-concept, (3) distorted relationships with others, and (4) a dysfunctional perception of reality. Trauma reactions were classified into four additional themes: (1) unstable cognitive responses, (2) negative emotional responses, (3) maladaptive behavioral reactions, and (4) physical responses.
