Abstract

The aim of this research was to develop the conceptual components of spouses' resilience based on Islamic sources and to examine their validity. Given the research objective, both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed. In the qualitative phase, a semantic analysis of the concept of resilience was first conducted, ultimately identifying eleven concepts related to resilience as entries in Islamic sources, along with eight concepts referring to spouses. For data analysis, the conventional and directed qualitative content analysis method of Hsieh and Shannon (2005) was used. Ultimately, eleven categories were obtained, which, through a further classification, led to the extraction of four major categories. In the quantitative phase, using a survey method, the "content validity" index of the components was assessed by 10 experts in the humanities and psychology through purposive sampling, and the conceptual components of spouses' resilience were developed. The findings of the research indicated that the conceptual components of spouses' resilience based on Islamic sources consist of four main categories and eleven subcategories, namely: transcendent attentions (remembrance and recollection of God, attention to otherworldly rewards, attention to spiritual role models), transcendent attitudes (attitude of trial/affliction, attitude of growth, viewing the spouse as a blessing), flexibility (recognizing and accepting the spouse's gender-based characteristics, adjusted expectations of the spouse), and relational emotions (interpersonal compatibility, empathy and mutual understanding between spouses, intimacy). The results of this research have provided a suitable foundation for developing a spouses' resilience questionnaire and designing its educational package.
