Abstract

Every human being may experience depression at different stages of life. This illness can overshadow physical health, emotions, behavior, and the spiritual well-being of individuals. Although numerous approaches have addressed the treatment of depression so far, depression still ranks at the top of psychological disorders. The aim of the present study was to develop a meaning-of-life therapy package based on Islamic sources to reduce the symptoms of depressive disorder. The research method was selected as qualitative and quantitative (mixed). To achieve the aforementioned goal, first, the components of meaning in life for reducing depression were extracted using the qualitative content analysis method; then, these components were evaluated using two indices—the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and the Content Validity Index (CVI)—from the perspective of 11 experts. The research findings in the first part reported 12 thematic components: God, the Imam, self, father and mother, spouse, child, those around, the world, work and effort, blessings and possessions, hardship, and the hereafter, all of which were confirmed by the experts; furthermore, the research findings in the second part comprised 8 training sessions focused on the themes of meaning in life to reduce depression symptoms. In each session, operational objectives, strategies, and appropriate techniques were formulated. At this stage, to assess the validity of the aforementioned package, the opinions of 11 experts were surveyed using the two indices of Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI). After applying the experts' supplementary comments, the meaning-of-life educational package was finally developed in 8 sessions.
